Convinced she’s a part of the witness protection program, sixteen-year-old Jewel Rose is shuffled around the globe with her family like a pack of traveling gypsies. After arriving at lucky home twenty-seven, she stumbles upon a mysterious boy with magical powers claiming to be her guardian . . . and warning of imminent danger. Despite the obvious sparks between them, Jewel discovers a relationship is forbidden, and the more she learns about dark, brooding Roman, she begins to question who she can even believe—the family who raised her, or the supposed sworn protector who claims they’ve been lying to her all along.

As she struggles to uncover who her family has really been running from, she is forced to hide her birthmark that reveals who she is. With new realities surfacing, unexplained powers appearing, and two tempting boys vying for her heart, Jewel battles to learn who she can trust in an ever growing sea of lies, hoping she’ll make it through her seventeenth birthday alive.

“Anything for my butterfly,” he whispered, and then softly pressed his lips against mine.

What an amazing read! I didn’t know what to except going into Spectral, but now that I am done all I can say is with romance, action, mystery, suspense, and witchcraft all put into one epic novel, this has made one amazing YA debut!

Spectral is through the eyes of True…well at least that is her name for the moment, True’s real name is Jewel. Jewel is a part of the witness protection program, her and her family has been moving and changing names for as long as she can remember.  Her parents tell her there are bad people in the world that want them dead, and while Jewel believes it, once she arrives in her new town..strange things start happening. Jewel is about to find out that her whole life is a lie, the people around her aren’t who she thinks they are, and she herself is not as she seems. …and most importantly, she will find out she can’t trust anyone.

This novel was magical! I for one am not one that reads witchcraft books often, I don’t know why, but they have always been my least favorite in the paranormal genre…but after reading Spectral I am left speechless! The witchcraft in this novel was so different than any other witch themed novel, each witch had a unique power, some were able to turn invisible, others could control people with voice commands, and others could even put whatever image they want into your mind to make you feel like you were living in your own nightmares.  Yeah these witches were not people to be messing with!

Besides the awesome unique-ness of the witches in the novel I also loved the love interests in Spectral. Normally there will be one love interest in which I cannot stand, but in Spectral I loved both of them! While Roman is the one that was mysterious and protective and totally stole my heart, I still really liked the other love interest Chase. Chase was your average genuinely nice guy that you couldn’t help, but like! Shannon put together an amazing love triangle in Spectral!

Another person in which I loved (but not quite as much as Roman(;) was Jewel, I felt so sorry for her having to move so often, and for not even being able to trust her own family. While I did love Jewel, I will say a few times she did react rather irrational to some things, but another time when some people closed to her passed away, I felt she didn’t mourn them enough. It felt like at the moment she was really upset, but later in the day she was fine…which seemed to me way too soon to be acting okay.

Besides from adding whole new twists in witches, Spectral will give you epic action scenes, leave you on the edge of your seat till the very end, while still making your heart all fuzzy from the romance! This is a debut book you do not want to miss!
