Red mirrored scales race up my arms as the haze of pain blurs my vision. My bones crack, breaking to realign. I scream. It is then that the realization of my unavoidable fate sinks in; I am of a dying race. I am dragon. Aurora Megalos, orphaned and teetering on the edge of adulthood, thought finding her past would curb the sting of being an outcast. Having no memories of the time before she awoke on her foster mother’s doorstep, she yearns for the emptiness inside her to be filled. With her fellow orphaned best friend, Fenn, by her side, she has nothing to lose and everything to gain. But something powerful stirred within her that she couldn’t explain. Something wanted out. In the dark of night, a crazed Seer, dubbed Mr.Creepy, erases everything she’s ever known with an impending prophecy. She now faces two paths. Return to her true home to protect a dying race against a growing evil, or stay hidden in the safety of our realm with a shot at a true love. With a vengeful Arch Enemy stopping at nothing to see her dead, she’s running out of time; a decision must be made. What would you choose?

Really loved the idea of this story, I for one am a huge fan of dragons in novels, sadly it is something that is not put into novels as often as vampires or werewolves though. So when I saw Born in Flames on Reading away the days tour sign up page, I was more than ecstatic to sign up and read it.

At first going into Born in Flames, while I was excited, I was also nervous the book was going to have too much in common with Firelight, just based off of the cover, a girl that can turn into a fire breathing dragon. I am glad to report that those are the only things it had in common with Firelight. Born in Flames has mages, magic, prophecies  destines, different realms, and so much more that made it a unique and awesome story!

This is a book I would recommend to people that enjoy light fantasy novels, cause while it was a fantasy novel, it wasn't one that was confusing, alot was going on in this book, but never once did I feel lost on what was happening (which happens sometimes in alot of fantasy novels I read). Candace is an amazing writer, her words flowed beautifully and everything she painted out was easy to visualize, you really feel like you're in the book while reading it.

The reason I gave this book 3 stars, instead of 4 or 5 is because while I did love Candace's writing, and loved the unique-ness of the story..one thing I did not like was our main character Aurora. Sometimes I liked her, but alot of the time...I didn't. For being a woman out of high school I felt she acted very immature. In Born in Flames for Aurora to be able to go back to the realm she is from she has to find 3 keys...and instead of really trying hard to figure out where they could be, she would just get frustrated, and go harass people to just tell her where they are...even though they had already told her they can't. She would just keep bugging them and bugging them, I understand her getting frustrated but it still got on my nerves.

While I didn't like Aurora all that much I did like her friend/love interest Fenn. There were a couple times where he acted irrational, but it was all in protecting Aurora so I let it slide. Fenn really cared for Aurora, and I felt bad that Aurora kept trying to keep him in the friend zone, when he clearly loved her and felt more than friendship between them. I also think him and Aurora are good for each other, when Aurora was stressing out, Fenn knew how to make light of the situation and calm her down. He was just overall a charming sweet guy, and I am looking forward to more of him and Aurora in book 2.

Even though I only gave this book 3 stars I will still be buying and reading the next book in the series. I felt the only thing that kept this book from getting a higher rating was Aurora, and I do believe she will grow up much more in the second book. Or at least I hope so. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a unique fantasy novel, with a slight romance, and a good vs evil story.

Born in Flames is the debut novel of Candace Knoebel. It is the first part of a trilogy which I am looking forward to finishing since I love dragons and loved the concept of the book, however, I always feel a bit disappointed in first books, because I want to know what else happens in the story, but my impatience is hardly Knoebel's fault... I WANT MORE!

Great story and highly recommend it!
